SA Casino Rank earns a commission from some of the sites we link to. This never affects our reviews. How we earn money. 18+ only.
Almost every South African betting site advertises a welcome bonus. Some are good value; others are almost impossible to turn into cash. This guide compares the sign-up and deposit bonuses at the licensed sites we’ve reviewed, explains how wagering requirements really work, and shows you how to spot a fair offer before you deposit.
How a wagering requirement works
Example: a R500 bonus with a 5x rollover
Only bets at odds of 1.50 or higher count · Must be met within the time limit, e.g. 30 days
Miss the deadline and the bonus, and any winnings from it, are usually removed.

Betting bonuses compared: licensed SA sites
These are the sign-up and welcome bonuses at the licensed South African betting sites we’ve reviewed so far. We read the full terms for each one. Offers change often, so always check the terms on the site before you claim.
| Site | Sign-up offer | Welcome offer | Wagering | Min. deposit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Play.co.za Western Cape licence | 30 free spins with no wagering (no deposit needed), or 125% up to R3,000 | Up to R30,000 over three deposits, plus a Sports Free Bet up to R1,000 | 29x the bonus and 1x the deposit, within 15 days | R50 for the sign-up match, R100 for the welcome offer |
| YesPlay Western Cape licence | None | 100% first deposit bonus up to R3,000 | 7x the deposit plus bonus, within 7 days, on sports odds of 3.1 or higher | R20 |
| Playabets Mpumalanga licence | None | 100% first deposit match up to R3,000, plus 50 free spins on deposits of R100 or more | 6x on sports, horse racing and Lucky Numbers (odds 1.8+), 35x on casino, within 7 days | R100 for the free spins |
Our pick for most players: Play.co.za’s no-wagering free spins
Play.co.za is the only site on our list with a sign-up offer you can claim without depositing. New players can choose 30 free spins on Gates of Olympus 1000 with no wagering, so anything you win is real money you can withdraw once your account is FICA verified. No promo code is needed. See our Play.co.za promo code guide for how to claim it.
Best for sports bettors: Playabets
Playabets’ 6x rollover on sports at minimum odds of 1.8 is one of the more reachable requirements we’ve seen, and it also counts horse racing and Lucky Numbers. The catch is the short 7-day time limit, so only deposit what you can comfortably bet through in a week.
Lowest deposit: YesPlay
You can claim YesPlay’s bonus with just R20. But the terms are tough: you must bet 7 times your deposit plus bonus within 7 days, and only bets at odds of 3.1 or higher count. That suits players who like accumulators and longer odds, not players who mostly back favourites.
Common types of betting bonus
- Deposit match: the site adds a percentage of your first deposit as bonus money, for example 100% up to R3,000. This is the most common welcome bonus.
- Sign-up (no-deposit) bonus: a small bonus or free spins credited just for registering, sometimes only after you complete FICA. No deposit needed. Compare current offers on our no deposit bonus betting sites page.
- Free bet: a bet token you can place without risking your own money. Usually only the winnings are paid out, not the free bet stake itself.
- Free spins: spins on a named slot game at a fixed value, such as R1 a spin. Check whether the winnings have wagering or a maximum win.
- Multi-deposit welcome package: a bonus spread over your first two or three deposits, like Play.co.za’s offer of up to R30,000. The headline number assumes you deposit the maximum each time.
- Odds boosts: improved odds on selected matches or bets.
- Cashback and loyalty rewards: ongoing offers for existing customers, such as a refund on certain losing bets.
Wagering requirements explained
Bonus money usually can’t be withdrawn straight away. First you have to bet a certain amount, called the wagering requirement or “rollover”. Here’s a simple example:
| Bonus | R500 |
| Wagering requirement | 5 times the bonus |
| Total you must bet | R500 × 5 = R2,500 |
| Minimum odds | Only bets at odds of 1.50 or higher count |
| Time limit | For example, 30 days |
If you don’t meet the requirement in time, the bonus and any winnings from it are usually removed. The lower the rollover and the longer the time limit, the better the offer.
“Bonus only” or “deposit plus bonus”?
This small detail makes a big difference. Say you deposit R500 and get a 100% bonus of R500:
- 7x the bonus only: R500 × 7 = R3,500 to bet.
- 7x the deposit plus bonus: (R500 + R500) × 7 = R7,000 to bet. That’s double, and it’s how YesPlay’s offer works.
A real example: Play.co.za’s welcome offer
Play.co.za’s three-deposit offer asks for 29x the bonus plus 1x the deposit within 15 days. On its first stage (a 100% match), a R1,000 deposit gets you a R1,000 bonus, so you’d need to bet R29,000 + R1,000 = R30,000 within 15 days. That’s about R2,000 a day. The upside is that Play.co.za keeps your deposit separate from the bonus, so you can still withdraw your own money. Read the full breakdown in our review.
Why a bigger bonus isn’t always better
The headline amount is the least important part of a bonus. What matters is how much you have to bet to turn it into cash, and how quickly. Compare these two made-up offers on a R1,000 deposit:
| Offer A | Offer B | |
|---|---|---|
| Headline | 100% up to R1,000 | 200% up to R5,000 |
| Bonus on a R1,000 deposit | R1,000 | R2,000 |
| Rollover | 5x the bonus | 30x the bonus |
| Total you must bet | R5,000 | R60,000 |
| Time limit | 30 days | 7 days |
Offer B looks twice as generous, but you’d need to bet R60,000 in a week. Most players would lose the bonus long before that. Offer A is far more realistic.
How to claim a betting bonus
- Pick a licensed site. Check the provincial licence at the bottom of the site. Here’s how.
- Read the bonus terms first. Note the rollover, minimum odds, time limit and minimum deposit.
- Register with your real details. Use the same name as on your ID and bank account. Enter a promo code only if the site asks for one.
- Complete FICA. Upload your ID and proof of address straight away. Many sites won’t pay out bonus winnings until you’re verified. See our FICA guide.
- Opt in and deposit. Choose the bonus when asked, then make at least the minimum deposit. Check the payment methods guide, because some methods may not qualify.
- Track your rollover. Most sites show your progress in the bonus or promotions section of your account.
Terms to check before you claim
- Rollover: how many times you must bet the bonus, and whether it applies to the bonus only or to your deposit too.
- Minimum odds: bets below the minimum don’t count.
- Time limit: how long you have to meet the requirement.
- Eligible bets: some sports, markets or games may not count, or may count at a lower rate.
- Maximum win: some bonuses cap how much you can win from them.
- Withdrawing early: withdrawing before you’ve completed the rollover often cancels the bonus.
- Payment method: some sites exclude certain deposit methods from bonuses.
Bonuses for existing players
The welcome bonus is a one-off, but regular promotions can be worth more over time. Look at what a site offers after you’ve signed up:
- Loyalty programmes: Playabets’ Loyalty Club has six tiers with up to 15% cashback and 10% rakeback.
- Cashback and challenges: Play.co.za offers cashback and Cash Challenges for regular players. See our Play.co.za VIP review.
- Competitions: prize draws like the Play.co.za Maldives competition.
Common bonus mistakes
- Claiming a bonus without reading the terms, then finding your winnings locked.
- Betting below the minimum odds, so your bets don’t count towards the rollover.
- Withdrawing before the rollover is done, which can cancel the bonus.
- Leaving FICA until you want to withdraw, which delays your payout.
- Opening a second account to claim a bonus again. This breaks the terms and can get all your accounts closed.
How to tell if a bonus is fair
A smaller bonus with simple terms is often worth more than a big headline number with a high rollover. As a rough guide, look for a low rollover, reasonable minimum odds, at least a few weeks to meet the terms, and terms written in plain language. Most importantly, only claim bonuses from licensed South African sites.
We read the full bonus terms for every site we review and explain them in each review. See our current top licensed betting sites, or the new betting sites we’re researching.
A bonus is not free money
Bonuses are designed to get you betting more. Never deposit more than you planned just to unlock a bigger bonus, and never chase a rollover you can’t afford. If you want to limit your spending, most licensed sites let you set deposit limits in your account.
Frequently asked questions
Which betting site has the best sign-up bonus in South Africa?
Of the licensed sites we’ve reviewed, Play.co.za’s 30 free spins with no wagering are the best value for most players, because you don’t need to deposit and the winnings have no rollover. For a deposit bonus, Playabets’ 6x rollover on sports is easier to meet than most.
Are there betting sites with a no-deposit bonus?
Yes, but they’re usually small, such as free spins or a small free bet credited when you register or complete FICA. Read the terms, because some no-deposit bonuses have wagering or a maximum win. See our full list of no deposit bonus betting sites.
Can I withdraw a betting bonus straight away?
Usually not. You’ll need to meet the wagering requirement first, and complete FICA verification before any withdrawal.
Do I need a promo code?
Not always. Many sites, including Play.co.za, apply the sign-up offer automatically when you register. If a code is needed, the site will show a field for it during sign-up.
Why was my bonus removed?
The most common reasons are missing the time limit, withdrawing before completing the rollover, or breaking a bonus rule such as betting both sides of the same match. Ask the site’s support team which rule applied.
Can I claim a welcome bonus more than once?
No. Welcome bonuses are one per person, household or device. Opening extra accounts breaks the site’s terms and can get your accounts closed.
Do I have to claim a bonus?
No. You can usually decline a bonus, which means no wagering requirement and you can withdraw your winnings freely.
