SA derbies to watch

Derbies between South African teams are often the most closely fought URC matches, because the sides know each other well and travel isn’t a factor. The first half of the 2026/27 season has six:

  • Bulls v Lions, Saturday 10 October, Pretoria
  • Stormers v Sharks, Saturday 10 October, Cape Town
  • Lions v Bulls, Saturday 5 December, Johannesburg
  • Sharks v Stormers, Saturday 5 December, Durban
  • Stormers v Lions, Saturday 19 December, Cape Town
  • Sharks v Bulls, Saturday 19 December, Durban

For betting, derbies tend to have tighter handicaps than matches against European sides, and home advantage matters more than usual. Check team news, because coaches sometimes rest Springboks around the November Test window.

About the URC

The URC brings together professional teams from Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Italy and South Africa. The four South African franchises joined in 2021, which means regular trips to Europe and European teams travelling to South Africa. That travel, along with the change in climate and altitude, is one of the things bettors look at closely.

Tips for betting on the URC

  • Watch for rotation: during international windows and busy periods, teams rest players. Check the team sheets before placing a bet.
  • Consider travel and conditions: a Highveld match at altitude is very different from a cold, wet evening in Europe.
  • Look beyond the winner: handicap and total points markets often offer better value in matches with a clear favourite.
  • Set a budget: a long season means lots of matches. Decide how much you want to spend before the season starts.
