What is the Nations Championship?
The Nations Championship is a new competition, played for the first time in 2026, that links the July and November Test windows. Six Southern Hemisphere teams, including the Springboks, play six Northern Hemisphere teams, and the pool standings decide the matches on a Finals Weekend at Twickenham in London from 27 to 29 November 2026. For bettors, it means November Tests now carry real stakes, so expect strong team selections rather than experimental line-ups.
Popular rugby betting markets explained
Rugby offers far more than just picking the winner. These are the markets you’ll see most often at South African bookmakers:
- Match winner: who wins the match. Some bookmakers also offer the draw as a separate option, which usually pays well because draws are rare in rugby.
- Handicap: the favourite starts with a points deficit (for example -8.5) and the underdog with a head start. Your bet wins if your team still wins once the handicap is applied. This makes lopsided matches more interesting to bet on.
- Winning margin: you pick the winner and the range they win by, such as 1 to 12 points or 13 or more.
- Total points (over/under): whether the combined score of both teams will be over or under a set number.
- Try scorer: whether a player scores a try at any time, or scores the first try of the match.
- Half-time/full-time: who leads at half-time and who wins at full-time, as one bet.
Things to check before you bet on a Test match
- Team selection: Test teams are usually named a few days before kick-off. Changes to key positions can move the odds.
- Venue and travel: home advantage, altitude and long-haul travel all play a role in international rugby.
- Weather: wet conditions tend to mean fewer points, which matters for total points bets.
- Bet settlement rules: read how your bookmaker settles bets if a match is postponed or abandoned.
