Every licensed betting site in South Africa will ask you to “FICA” your account. It can feel like a hassle, but it’s a good sign: it means the site follows South African law. Here’s what FICA is, which documents you need, how long it takes, why documents get rejected and how to get verified quickly.

What is FICA?
FICA is the Financial Intelligence Centre Act of 2001. It requires businesses that handle money, including licensed bookmakers, to confirm who their customers are. This helps prevent fraud and money laundering, and it keeps under-18s from betting.
Since the Act was updated in 2017, each business can decide how strictly to check each customer based on risk. That’s why one bookmaker might verify you from your ID number alone, while another asks for several documents.
Documents you’ll usually need
| Document | What’s usually accepted | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| Proof of identity | Smart ID card (front and back), green ID book or passport | Must be valid and show your photo clearly |
| Proof of address | Utility or municipal bill, bank statement, cellphone contract statement or lease agreement | Many sites want it no older than three months, with your name and home address |
| Proof of bank account | Bank statement or bank confirmation letter | Often asked for before your first withdrawal; the account must be in your name |
| Selfie (some sites) | A photo of you holding your ID | Make sure your face and the ID are both clear |
Requirements differ between bookmakers, so check the FICA or verification page in your account for exactly what’s needed.
No utility bill in your name?
This is common if you rent, live with family or are a student. A bank statement or cellphone contract statement with your address usually works instead. If you don’t have any of these, ask the site’s support team which other documents they accept.
How to FICA your betting account
- Register with your real details. Use your full name exactly as it appears on your ID, and your correct ID number.
- Open the verification page. It’s usually under “My Account”, “Verify” or “FICA”.
- Upload your documents. Take clear photos or upload PDFs through the official website or app.
- Wait for approval. You’ll normally get an email, SMS or account notification once you’re verified.
- Fix anything rejected. If a document is declined, the site should tell you why. Upload a new one rather than the same file again.
How long does FICA take?
It varies by site. Some bookmakers can verify you automatically from your ID number within minutes. When documents are checked by hand, it often takes from a few hours to one or two business days, and longer over weekends and public holidays. Uploading your documents as soon as you sign up means you won’t be waiting when you want to withdraw.
Why FICA documents get rejected
| Problem | How to fix it |
|---|---|
| Blurry, dark or cropped photo | Retake it in good light with all four corners of the document visible |
| Proof of address is too old | Upload a document from the last three months |
| Name doesn’t match your account | Contact support to correct your account name, or use a document in the same name |
| Address doesn’t match your account | Update your address in your account to match the document |
| Expired ID or passport | Use a valid document |
| Only the front of a smart ID card | Upload both the front and the back |
| Bank account in someone else’s name | Use an account in your own name; withdrawals can only go to you |
Tips to get verified faster
- Use the same name on your betting account as on your ID and bank account.
- Take clear, well-lit photos with all four corners of the document visible.
- Upload your documents straight after signing up, rather than waiting until you want to withdraw.
- Upload during business hours if the site checks documents by hand.
- Only upload documents through the bookmaker’s official website or app, never via links sent in unexpected messages.
FICA, bonuses and withdrawals
FICA affects more than just withdrawals. Many sign-up bonuses are only credited, or can only be paid out, once you’re verified. For example, winnings from Play.co.za’s no-wagering free spins can be withdrawn once your account is verified. See our Play.co.za promo code guide and our betting bonuses guide for more.
Before your first withdrawal, some sites also ask for proof of the bank account you’re withdrawing to. Our payment methods guide explains withdrawal options and times.
Is your information safe?
Licensed bookmakers must protect your personal information under POPIA, the Protection of Personal Information Act. They can only use your documents for verification and legal purposes. To stay safe:
- only upload documents to licensed sites;
- never send your ID by WhatsApp or email to someone who contacts you first;
- check the web address is the bookmaker’s real site before uploading.
What if a site doesn’t ask for FICA?
Be careful. Licensed South African bookmakers are required to verify their customers. A site that lets you bet and withdraw without any checks is a strong sign that it isn’t licensed here. Learn how to check a betting site’s licence, or see the red flags of offshore sites.
Frequently asked questions
Can I bet before my FICA is approved?
Some bookmakers let you deposit and bet before verification is complete, but you won’t be able to withdraw until your documents are approved. Others require FICA first.
How long does FICA take on betting sites?
Anything from a few minutes, if the site verifies you automatically, to one or two business days if documents are checked by hand.
Do I need to FICA at every betting site?
Yes. Each bookmaker has to verify you separately, even if you’re already verified at another site or at your bank.
Can I use someone else’s bank account?
No. Licensed sites only pay withdrawals into a bank account in your own name.
Can foreigners FICA with a passport?
Many sites accept a valid passport instead of a South African ID, but some offers are only for South African ID holders. Check the site’s terms or ask support before you sign up.
Is it safe to upload my ID to a betting site?
Licensed bookmakers are required to protect your personal information under POPIA. Only upload documents to licensed sites, and only through their official website or app.
