Our verdict so far
Playabets is one of the older names in South African betting. By its own account it started as a single retail betting shop in KwaZulu-Natal in the 1950s, became Playabets in 1990 and moved online in 2014. It holds a provincial licence and offers a long list of local deposit methods.
The welcome bonus is modest next to some rivals, but the 6x rollover for sports bets is low and realistic to clear. The catch is the short 7-day window and a R15,000 cap on bonus winnings. For sports bettors who want a simple, licensed bookmaker with local roots, Playabets looks like a solid choice.

Licence and safety
Playabets is operated by Playabets MP (Pty) Ltd and licensed by the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER) under licence number 9-2-1-09689. Only players aged 18 and over can open an account, and deposits and withdrawals must use payment methods in your own name.
Signing up and FICA
Signing up takes a few minutes. Before you can withdraw, Playabets must verify your account under FICA rules. Its terms say it may ask for proof of identity, proof of address and banking details, and in some cases for proof of where your money comes from. No withdrawal is processed until verification is complete.

Withdrawals
Withdrawals are requested from the Withdraw section of your account. Playabets’ terms set a few rules:
- Your deposit must be wagered at least once before you can withdraw it
- Your account must be fully FICA verified
- Winnings are only paid to an account in your name
- Playabets may set daily, weekly or monthly withdrawal limits
Other review sites report that EFT withdrawals usually arrive within 24 to 48 hours once your account is verified.
Welcome bonus and terms
New players get a 100% match on their first deposit, up to R3,000. You need to opt in on the promotions page or the deposit screen before you deposit. Here are the key terms:
- Deposits between R50 and R3,000 qualify for the 100% match
- Rollover is 6x on sports, horse racing and Lucky Numbers at odds of 1.8 or better, and 35x on casino games
- You have 7 days from your first deposit to finish the rollover, or the remaining bonus is forfeited
- Winnings from bonus funds are capped at R15,000
- Withdrawing before you finish the rollover cancels the bonus and anything won with it
- One offer per person, household and payment method
Deposits of R100 or more also get 50 free spins on Gates of Olympus, with no wagering on winnings. The spin value depends on your deposit:

Loyalty Club and VIP
Playabets moved to a new Loyalty Club with 26 levels across six tiers. Every real-money bet earns XP, which moves you up the levels, and coins, which you spend in the rewards marketplace on free spins, free bets, bonuses and cash. Bonus-funded bets don’t count.

On casino games you earn 10 XP per R100 staked, and sports singles and multis earn XP faster. Unlike most loyalty schemes, XP never expires and your tier is kept for life, with no annual reset. Completing a tier drops a mystery box. Coins and unopened mystery boxes expire after three months. Diamond and GOAT players get a dedicated VIP account manager and invitations to exclusive events.
Separately, Playabets runs an invitation-based VIP programme. VIP status is based on deposits, bets and active play days. Players who reach 90% of the criteria enter “Pre VIP” status, and full VIPs get a personal account manager, priority support and tailored offers.
Sports betting
Sports betting is where Playabets is strongest. You can bet on soccer (including the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1), rugby, cricket, tennis, basketball, Formula 1 and more, both before and during matches. Popular South African events, such as Springbok tests, get special markets like winning margins and point ranges, and some odds are boosted.
- Bet Insurance: get up to 100% of your stake back as a free bet if only one leg of your multi bet loses
- 2UP Early Payout: your soccer bet is paid out as a winner if your team goes two goals ahead
- Multibet bonus: boost your winnings on multi bets by up to 1,000%

Mobile
Playabets offers an Android app, downloaded as an APK file directly from the Playabets App page on its website (version 5.2.9 when we checked). Playabets says it installs in a few minutes and uses very little data. Only download it from playabets.co.za, not from third-party sites. We didn’t find an iPhone app, but the full website works in any mobile browser, including Safari on iOS.
