South African Betting Licence Checker

Not sure if a betting site is legal in South Africa? Type its name or web address below. The checker shows the licensed company, the provincial gambling board and the licence number for 61 South African betting brands, so you can compare it with the site’s footer before you deposit.

Tip: paste the address from your browser bar. We match the brand, so www.hollywoodbets.net/betting works too.

How to read your result

  • Provincially licensed: the brand is in our list with at least one South African provincial licence. Check that the same board and number appear in the site’s footer.
  • Checked against the operator’s own site: we confirmed these licence details ourselves on the betting site. Other entries come from Betline’s directory.
  • Warning note: something in the record looks off, such as a licence number that matches the company registration number. The brand may still be licensed. Confirm it with the board.
  • Not in our list: we don’t have the brand yet. It isn’t a verdict either way, so follow the steps shown to check it yourself.

How to check a licence yourself in 3 steps

  1. Find the footer. Every legal SA bookmaker prints its company name, provincial board and licence number at the bottom of the site, usually next to the 18+ notice.
  2. Match the company. The company in the footer (for example Raging River Trading for Betway) should match the licensed company shown in our checker.
  3. Confirm with the board. Each board publishes or will confirm its licensed bookmakers. The links are in the table below.

Red flags that a betting site is not licensed

  • Only an offshore licence in the footer, such as Curaçao, Malta or Anjouan.
  • No company name or licence number anywhere on the site.
  • Real-money online casino games like live roulette or blackjack. These are not legal online in South Africa.
  • Deposits only in crypto, or a request to pay into a private bank account.
  • A web address that is almost, but not quite, the real brand’s address.

Where this data comes from

Most of the records in this checker come from the open South African betting licence dataset published by Betline (last updated 1 October 2026). Thanks to them for making it public.

For 14 brands we review or compare often, we replaced Betline’s record with licence details we checked ourselves on the operator’s own website on 24 October 2026. These carry a “checked against the operator’s own site” label. Where a record looks wrong, for example a licence number that is really a company registration number or the same number listed for two brands, the checker shows a warning instead of hiding it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if a betting site is licensed in South Africa?

Type the site’s name or web address into the checker above. If it is in our list you will see the licensed company, the provincial gambling board and the licence number. Then scroll to the footer of the betting site itself and make sure the same board and number appear there.

Who licenses online betting sites in South Africa?

Sports betting sites are licensed by the nine provincial gambling boards, such as the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board and the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator. The National Gambling Board oversees the system but does not issue bookmaker licences itself.

Are online casinos legal in South Africa?

Online casino games are not legal under the National Gambling Act. Licensed bookmakers may only offer sports betting and betting on numbers, which is why the slot-style games on SA sites are sold as “bet games” tied to a betting licence.

What does it mean if a site is not in the checker?

It means the brand is not in our list yet. It is not proof that the site is illegal. Look for a South African provincial licence number in the site’s footer and confirm it with that board. If the site only shows an offshore licence such as Curaçao, it is not licensed in South Africa.

Does one provincial licence cover the whole country?

A bookmaker licensed in one province can legally accept online bets from players anywhere in South Africa, which is why most big brands hold one or two licences rather than nine. Some, like Hollywoodbets, hold several because they also run retail branches in different provinces.

Where does this licence data come from?

Most entries come from the open South African betting licence dataset published by Betline. We replaced 14 brands with records we checked ourselves on the operators’ own websites, and we flag entries where the number looks wrong. Each result shows its source and the date it was last checked.
